In September 2020, the Greek government submitted its Just Transition Development Plan.
The transition in Greece is focused on de-carbonisation, setting a goal of withdrawing all lignite plants by 2028, mainly in Western Macedonia as well as in other regions. Only the power plant “Ptolemais V” is planned to operate until 2028.
The Greek plan has been approved by the European Commission in June 2022, with a total economic support of €1.63 billion in which it is prescribed the:
Construction of photovoltaic parks and Green Hydrogen production unit,
Creation of Industrial Electromobility Park-development of electromobility products (lithium batteries),
Development of intelligent cultivation-hydroponics.
